The evolution of NS 7001
Author: srman

Now part of this post is current and part nostalgic but I'm posting it here. I first ran into NS 7001 in October 1986 as one of the three GP40X's they had still in Southern paint running as a mid train DPU near Louisville Ky. Ten years later in December 1996 now in NS paint it lead westbound 160 nearing Louisville. Now fast forward to March 16,2017 where I found present day NS 7001 now a SD60E working the Bremen Ga. siding with the A43 local job. Rest of images in the next post.

Following up on the images the present day 7001 was built from NS SD50 6522 and in July 1989 it led an eastbound long hood forward by New Albany In. as it neared Louisville Ky.

Not quite, srman, NS SD60E 7001 is a rebuilt SD60.  It is former NS EMD SD60 6522/HLCX 5957/CRIX 5957/UP 5957/CNW 8026.

Per Chris Toth, first 7001 left NS roster in 2001 to BDLX, then to GMTX. Two different locomotives appear to have the same number at GMTX. The remnant of the Southern unit might still be rusting in Paducah; I think I can see it on Google Maps.
