4610...not good news from Chattanooga....
Author: Larry576

As I type this "Southern" 4610 is INSIDE the paint booth at Debutts shop's in Chattanooga. We are not yet sure if it's getting a now overdue coat of new paint (making it the first Horsehead GP59) or touching up the green Southern paint. My source in Chattanooga will be keeping very close tabs on this. If I'm willing to bet its days of glory have come to close after 10 years.

Chris Toth has been saying it's going back to black for a while now... and I suspect he's right.

I haven't heard or reported anything specific on the 4610. Just keep in mind that the average interval bewteen painting is 8 years and it has now been 10 years for the 4610.

However, it could be that they are touching it up and clear coating it in time for Rail Days at the North Carolina Transportation Museum this weekend.

I wish the major roads would have a few heritage locos on their systems. I wish the 4610 would stay as is, as well as have an SD70 done in N&W blue and yellow.

The dispatcher in the CDS said it is bound for Mississippi.

Chris,
4610 is not scheduled to appear at RailDays this year. Like previous years NS is providing an Operation Lifesaver GP59.

I had an opportunity to look this unit over real good recently, and I noted that the battery box covers were pretty badly rusted at the bottom - the holes from acid leaks were getting pretty big. I figured even if the covers get replaced, they would either be black, or would have to be patched green to the extent the difference would be noticable.

The 4610 is not going to be at Rail Days. :-(

I passed by the museum yesterday, and NS had already sent its representation: The customary GP59 (#4631 if I remember correctly), and the NS Exhibit car.

The biggest task for Rail Days? Keeping all of us rail ops volunteers from taking over the Exhibit car... >:-)
