SEPTA DIESEL

when is septa going to buck up and get some decent diesel power.....perhaps some FP40's or GP 40s

SEPTA discontinued all their diesel passenger service years ago.

SEPTA has has a number of diesels since they abandoned non-electrified service. Among them:

A GE 80 ton switcher
A former Conrail GP9
the two RL-1's
the three SW1200's (now two BL-15's and one SW1200)
WCRR RS18 1803 (leased for wire train service)
three U34CH's from NJT (borrowed in 1993)
a PL1500 from Peoria Locomotive Works (for evaluation)

I was also told that in 1993 they evaluated an Amtrak F40PH for Railworks diesel service but it contacted the catenary when they tried to bring it into 30th Street Station's suburban platform.

You must remember the mentality of SEPTA is Transit oriented - they wish to be nothing more than a glorified trolley/subway operation.

I don't get that impression at all. To me SEPTA is a bus company that grudgingly operates some trolley, subway, and rail lines.

And they don't even run the bus company that well.

the really sad part is that the rail system is the only profitabe part. you would think they would be quick tp expand the profitable rail and cut back on the bus routes in rail servable territory

With a 15'3'' wire clearance, anything will hit that overhead wire. I've taken trains up to Lansdale from Newtown Jct (going back a few years) and hit the 66th st O.H.B. wire north of Tabor Jct with a MP15ac and a GP15-1. Nothing major, just blew the radio antenna off the roof and fried the engine radio.

It didn't matter anyway because at that time, CSX radios could only recieve on radio channel 90/90 and could not transmit to the towers at Wind / Wayne. Had to switch to 58/58 or call them on the land line or a cell phone.

Incedently, did the new radio channel cutover fix the problems with CSX radios?

Just remember what SEPTA stands for: the Society for the Elimination of Public Transportation Altogether.
