Early CSX Motive power questions...
Author: CSXSD70AC

Can anyone advise the following?

When were the CSX C40-8's and SD60's delivered?

When did these GE's leave the roster- U28,U30,U33,U36's?

When did the SD45's leave the roster?

Lastly when did the first of the SD40 rebuilds show up?

Thanks in advance for anyone who knows the answer to these.

The book CSX Diesel Locomotives in Color by the Stakems has most of the info you're looking for.

C40-8's: 1991- to 1993
SD60's: 1989
U28B: 3305 was the last May 2000 along with a few in
orange MOW scheme
U30B:1990
U33B:?
U36B:?
SD45's: early '90's? Though 3 of the SD45-2 lasted up
until the last few years

SD40 rebuilds
1989 to 1991

The first 94 C40-8s came in 1989.

So much for the accuracy of that book.

I do not have any exact dates, but...

The U33Bs seemed to disapear in the mid to late 1980s. I know of at least 3 of them that made it into CSX paint. The grey and bley version.

The U36Bs lasted into the early 1990's with many getting various CSX schemes. In fact... U36B WL01 made it to the current "Dark Future" CSX paint. It was recently retired and had been the load test unit at Waycross, GA. It may still be there, I am not sure.

The U33's slowly attritted away, some had already been retired at the same time others were getting paint. The U36's went away slowly also, but I think the last ones made it to 1996. The ones from the Bone Valley escaped and toured the system with the MATES in the early 90's--very interesting. That unit at WX has been retired for years--was in pristine FLS paint as "The Old Timer" until it's current paint job. The FLS paint must have pissed off somebody at Jax--why does this stationary load test unit get paint (that it didn't need?) while...well, have you seen a 2200 lately? Sorry, I have digressed...

Speaking of the U36Bs... when did the GE MATEs get retired. I know I saw a few in the Carolinas and Georgia mated with EMD power in the late 1990's to around 2000. I think they were still in service well after the U36Bs were gone.

Also... an interesting note I forgot to post earlier... back in the mid 1990s, Cycle Systems of Lynchburg, VA scrapped a number of old CSX locomtives including GP16s, SD35s, at least one H15, and a number of U36Bs.

The GE MATE slugs (CSX 5200 series) were never mated to any EMD units. They were always mated with the U36B's while on CSX. They were also retired at the same time as the U36B's were retired.

The #3305 was a U23B, not a U28B's. The last U28B should have been retired before the last of the U30B's.

actually, I think all the ex-L&N U28B's were upgraded to U30B specs, as they were
all numbered in the 5300's with the other U30B's. (the ACL/SAL's were U30B's as
delivered, but in the U28B carbody) I don't know how accurate it is, but I have
a roster that was included in one of the Microscale decal sets, which I think was
dated 12-1-89, and there were no U30B's, U33B's, U36C's or U28C's left. I think
there was one SD45 left. Most of the SD45-2's survived for awhile, and a couple
are still on the roster, along with some ex-EL's that came via CR.

I will have to go back through my photos but I am almost 100% sure I have pictures of MATEs with other power. One that sticks out firm in my mind was seeing a MATE with a MP15T in Savanah working the yard. I recall it clearly since the two looked out of place together. I also recal seeing multiple MATEs with a single unit in Rocky Mount, NC one time.

Agreed. A few of those "stealth" C40-8's were on Q396 and Q397 over Sand Patch during my first visit there in October 1989.
