Athearn's HO scale models were the keystone of BevBel's business. When Horizon bought Athearn and adopted their policy of selling only to brick-and-mortar hobby shops, they killed off BevBel's source of supply.

Why didn't Bev-Bel then make a deal with Accurail for truckloads of undecs at a bargain rate? MDC might have been an alternative then, also, but a lot of their designs were severely dated, as in frame mounting holes visible in door tracks, etc. Sometimes Accurail seems a bit too conservative with their choice of paint colors (they use a lot of Boxcar Red and other drab motifs), and an outfit like Bev-Bel could really jazz them up. Athearn boxcars themselves were not that great of a choice in the first place due to the unprototypical bottom door brackets on the boxcar sliding doors. When something better came along, you would think Bev-Bel would have changed for the better, too. Without Bev-Bel, there is certainly less variety, and seems nobody else has taken up where they left off. Fans of lesser roads have less to choose from now. --- --- - --- JLH

I wouldn't be so definite about this. Athearn/Horizon and Atlas both seem to me to be doing a reasonable job of producing minor roadnames for their new releases.
