The Walthers Broadway Limited and a real trivia questio
Author: crusader5619

When Walthers starts pumping this line out there is one car integral to the late 60's Broadway that is missing. There was corrugated side 10RMT-6DB that burned and was rebuilt into PRR's only postwar (I think) 11DBR car, ELBERTON. ELBERTON ran on one set of 28/29 through the last years of the train's history. Is anyone familiar with the car and is there anything on the market that could make a match for that one of a kind car? My vision is to buy about 7-9 cars to duplicate the final days of the real Broadway.

The "Elberton" was burned in a bad accident in Ft.Green Springs,Fl.in 1955.It was the last car on a Tampa-Boca Grande local, that consisted of
one of the Seaboard Air Line's Baby-face BLW's,a baggage car and a HW coach.A loaded gasoline truck hit the train just to the rear of the baggage car and sprayed gas all over the coach. The truck driver, and three crewmen on the train were killed.
The car sat at the SAL Gary Shop for many months waiting the lawyers.Later it was sent to be rebuilt.
I know all this from personal experience, because I worked at the shop at that time.I went into the USAF in June 1556 and the car was still there when I left.
There has been a lot written about this car.Without looking I know I have more information. It was a Budd car and I am not sure if when rebuilt, the window locations were changed.

Uncle Joe-just east of Tampa

Com'on Jpe, In the Air Force in 1556. I know you are old, ancient even but 1556?

Probably not, if you read the Walthers website you would have noticed that they are doing it as it ran in 1953, this would mean that the fire that burnt the car is still two years in the future.

I don't think Crusader was asking if Walthers was going to produce the Elberton -- just asking if there is something close on the broader market of model passenger cars from which he could create this car for HIS train.

If the rebuild did not change the window spacing, the only car close to the PRR car would be a Rivarossi car,but it will need some added work.

In ye olde days of catapults, someone had to ride on some of the high-tech "cruise" rocks to steer them.

Thanks SDP. I only knew a fragment of ELBERTON's history. My Dad drug me around (willingly!) on the Broadway when he was a Harrisburg Division Trainman on the Pennsy. I remember Duplex cars and ELBERTON because they both looked odd to a small boy!

No Walthers cars match the window arrangement? I'm looking to create a Broadway for display purposes...not too interested in a big scratchbuild job.

If you joined the AF in 56 and made it a career...I was one of the youngsters at the end of your career when I came in back in 1979.

Thanks for an interesting story.
