help with decoder selection
Author: mmrailfan

I bought an Athearn Ready to Roll ATSF GP60M #142 in Warbonnet scheme. It states on the box that it is DCC Quick Plug Equipped, but which decoder do I buy for this? I would like to add sound too. Thanks for any suggestions.

The unit is equipped with the 9-pin plug.

I personally use the Digitrax DH123D on my Athearn RTR DCC Ready units.

If you want a decoder only, TCS T1A.

If you want sound, Tsunami GN-1000. 828052 TSU-GN1000 EMD 710

A little late in the game but I prefer NCE D13SRJ decoders for my Athearn equipment. I've had really good luck with them and they've been really easy to program.

I second TCS for a simple decoder. The T1 is small, too, and reasonably priced. I just fitted a T1 to a Bachmann Branchline OO gauge loco (steam loco with split frame - ugh!) and it works a treat, that back emf allows incredible crawling at step one and what they call dither seems to overcome any hesitant starts.

For non sound you could use a LokPilot, or for sound you could use a loksound decoder.
