Trolley poles on diesel & steam locos were only there to actuate crossings, etc.

You do know that diesels don't have spark plugs, right?

Yup, and glow plugs don't count. I'm amazed at how many people that look
at that arrangement on the PE think that the pole somehow added to the power
of the unit. Now as to spark plugs in diesels, we routinely use spark ignition
diesels, they do exist, normally used for things like LPG and natural gas.
