where can I find sound chips and DCC decoders?
Author: steam290

Does anyone know where I can find a selection of sound modules for steam locomotives? I have quite a few engines that came with sound, and now I find little pleasure running the ones that don't have sound.

I'd like to ask the same question about DCC decoders. My older engines are all still DC and I'd like to convert them. Where could I find directions on how to do all of the above?

QSI produces some good sound decoders. The new Titan series sounds pretty good, but, I have only heard a diesel, not a steam engine.

Also look at ESU: http://www.esu.eu/en/products/loksound/
I understand they can be customized, but I do not have sufficient knowledge to verify that.

Soundtraxx and ESU make the best diesel sound decoders. QSI diesel sounds are terrible by comparison. I have no experience with steam sound decoders and therefore cannot recommend any.

Personally I prefer QSI for steam as the whistles are louder and pack a better punch. This is especially true if you have a lot of larger steam locos. The SoundTraxx whistles just don't cut it. The chuff is a bit deeper as well with QSI.

For diesels SoundTraxx Tsunami is by far the way to go but for steam, QSI has it all the way.
