Model Railroading > Atlas HO scale CSX era SD35 modelsDate: 12/03/12 20:33 Atlas HO scale CSX era SD35 models Author: GP35 Here are several HO scale Atlas CSX era SD35's. They are all factory painted with custom CSX numbers added using Microscale and some Herald King decals. Two are custom painted using Polly scale acrylics. They are L&N gray 4534 and the Seaboard System 4505.
These models were photographed outdoors in full natural sunlight. I used a small folding table with a white board for the background. I used my 8 mega-pixel Canon digital Rebel XT with a 18-55 mm zoom lens. I had the camera for six years now. It still works just fine for my needs. I weathered all the SD35's with Polly Scale acrylics using washes and the dry brush method. I applied a few thin coatings to get to the desired coverage. I sealed the weathering jobs with Testors Dullcote. I added several tiny CSX locomotive data decals using Microscale that the real CSX SD35's probably never received before their retirement. I thought they looked nice so I applied them to my models. CSX SD35's did not last long after the merger. One SD35 did last until about late 1996 or early 1997. That unit was 4559 in the blue and gray scheme. It did receive yellow nose ends but no sill stripe late in it's career on CSX. I remember seeing it several times on CSX Q400 and Q401 trains back in 1995. It was often on line doing it's share of work. I also seen the 4559 working the former RF&P Acca Yard on some of my trips there back then. All my models are not accurate in every aspect. It is not my concern to get every detail correct. I build my models to have fun. Hope everyone here can enjoy my models anyway. It's always nice to share work here along with many others. I actually have no layout at this time. My living situation does not allow for one at this moment. Hopefully in the future I can look forward to building at least a small layout. Can always look toward the future. Thanks for looking, Gilbert.

Back when I started a layout 40 years ago, I gradually bought several Atlas engines, including 5 SD35's. I have sold them in the last couple of years, because they were actually kinda noisy. The GP's were quieter. I hope you can find somebody close to you, that has a HO layout, and actually run them. It would be really nice to at least, run them once.

Would it be possible to perhaps give us a view of the set up you use to photograph these engines and what equipment (camera, lenses, exposures, lighting, etc) gear you use? If you have already posted such, I apologize for missing it!
