Surprised no one posted it yet! Athearn FB page currently says ETA July 2013 which is obviously a typo.

I hope they produce the MKT GP39-2's that were built using the GP49 carbodies!

Alaska had GP49's but were they London or LaGrange built?

La Grange. The only 50-series built in London were the CN SD50Fs, and in 1983 and 1985 when the ARR ordered their GP49s both plants were still operating (under capacity) and the only truly U.S. units GMD had built at that point remained the three batches of BN SD40-2s EMD had shifted to London.

That is what I thought. I just remember hearing that they went through Edmonton on their way to delivery. Knowing CN, I wonder if some of those units went through Edmonton more than once.

Just to clarify, these use the same GP frame as the recent 50's/38-2'?

So maybe more GP39-2's are in the future?

If it happened more than once I'm not sure what that would accomplish other than illustrate incompetence on CN's part. AFAIK, new locos are almost always shipped dead-in-train (with no fuel) as the purchasing railroad typically likes to 'set them up', install their own radios etc. I've heard of one or two rare instances where the purchasing and shipping railroad reached an agreement on using new locomotives in transit, but that's an exception.

Correct. I suspect that Athearn is far from done with this frame as it's good for the GP38/39/40/49/50 including Dash Twos as applicable.

My reaction was.

Uhm, OK well good luck with that. Now where the hell did I place the TV remote.

Couldn't have been more underwhelmed had they announced an all new f7 mold.

With all the hype they had a real chance to get a ton of attention. I'm sorry to say this grabbed my attention about as much as a party popper at the National 4th of July fireworks.

In particular, some western roads have had their locomotives officially placed in service in Ohio because of tax advantages for doing so.

I don't personally have a need for these older units since they don't really fit my period of interest. But I also commend Athearn for going a little off board (for once) and showing some love to the eastern prototypes instead of going back to bed with the western modeling crowd.

Although, I'm always bemused at the guys who lament about what a disappointment it is when a manufacturer doesn't produce something they want, and act as if it's a personal insult. If manufacturers did custom tooling, I'd not be surprised to find people complaining about that...

Big waste of time and effort.

No sale.

Athearn could have come out with a toothbrush, they've got their attention already.

Mr. MRL - not paying attention...

Though these don't fit my railroad, a lot of members in my club are thrilled Athearn has catered to SOU/NS fans and will be purchasing several models.

Hope Athearn can finish the Topeka cabs soon as I'll definitely be purchasing a couple!

Still trying to adjust to these being "old" units. Looks like Athearn is stepping into a market slot left wide open by Atlas.

I could say the same thing about DD40AXs, Gas Turbines, or the U25Cs everybody in California seems to want. A GP49 wasn't on my wants/needs list, but I might add one to my NS fleet; it's something Athearn could do as a modification to an existing model at minimal overhead cost.

At least give them credit for doing something that's not a Western prototype.

I believe ATSF took delivery of locomotives in Kansas for that reason. To this day CN and CP among others keep lawyers and accountants busy figuring where to register assets to best advantage. Railroads are far from the only ones working things to their advantage. Earlier this year United was busted for (allegedly) funneling it's significant O'Hare fuel accounts through an unattended office in a suburban strip mall to dodge Chicago taxes.
