Custom printed decals - dull or gloss coat?
Author: Clarence

I have some home ink-jet printed decals I need to top coat before I apply them to the model. Do I use dull coat or gloss coat or does it make a difference which one I use?
TIA,
Clarence

Before you apply the decals? Gloss.

I'm talking about spraying the decal so the ink doesn't run when I get it wet to slide it off the backing sheet.

I always use dull. Works great.

What do you use to apply them to your model to prevent them from curling?
Thanks.

Google Future floor finish and decaling. Works very well

Down toward the bottom of the page he talks about using it for decals. I have to try it.

Testors makes a spray-can decal fixative now. It's specifically designed to seal printer ink..I've used it and future floor wax...both worked pretty well. try to keep the actual decal out of water as much as possible-and only soak the paper backing...this helps in preventing ink runs.

Apply Testors Gloss Coat to the decal sheet prior to applying the decals. This will prevent the ink from running. I have done this before on ink jet printed decals & it works great. Dull coat applied to the model after decals have been applied & dry will conceal the decal film nicely. I always apply these Testors coatings with an airbrush mixing the coatings 50/50 with lacquer thinner - works great.
