Digitrax Programming Booster - which one.
Author: ajgreen

Hi all.

I'm in need of a programming track booster so I can program my Tsunami sound decoders with my Digitrax Super Chief system. I also use the JMRI software and my pc to program non sound decoders (using a PR3 USB interface).

So the big question is, do I purchase the Soundtraxx PTB-100 booster or the Powerpax booster (from Tony's Trains I believe)?

For those who had similar problems, what set up did you go with?

I appreciate your comments and assistance.

Many thanks,

Allister

I've had great success using my PR3 and just adjusting the input voltage to ~16volts or a little higher on the PS514. Have not needed a booster for my Tsunamis

I installed a PowerPax at a former club and would recommend it. It worked great and came with it's own housing.

We have a PB100 at the club and I have one at home. Both work fine.

I have the PTB100 and it works well with all decoders so far.

With some of the newer sound decoders, I found I was not able to program them
from the EasyDCC mothership as I had been able to do previously, having programmed
older sound decoders with fewer features. The PTB100 is just a board, no housing.

I doubt there is a lot of difference in the two you are comparing, either should work fine.

I just use the SPROG with my PC.

It works well.

If you have a pr3 already and normally program that way, spend the money on the ptb100. It is easy to hook up and requires no changes to and use it. I would however suggest you put your program track on a dpdt switch so you can do either a common non sound decoder on one pole or a sound unit on the other. Just a thought.

I like my PowerPax. Works as intended and no issues. I have all sound units and it helps my decoder Pro programming greatly.

I agree with Eric. I ripped the PR3 out of our Digitrax system in frustration and went with the Sprog connected to JMRI. we've never looked back. works flawlessly and I almost never get an error message.
