I figured these might be helpful for modeling. I need to weather mine, so I was happy to get this close.

The Cleveland MRA group did a spectacular job as the host city for the NMRA and made this possible.....thanks!!!

They're roller bearing cars. They just have a hinged lid over the bearing ends to protect them.

They were working with the refractory (brick) and gunnite linings they need to heat and temper them before the molten steel goes in them.

Great pics! Reminds me of working on the blast furnace floor at the former Stelco Hilton Works (now U.S. Steel Hamilton Works), blowing the plug and watching the molten steel flow into these cars from sometimes less than a foot away.

Definitely HOT work!

Anywho, here's another way to model these unusual cars:
