Model Railroading > Athearn Southern GP39X is out

I picked up from my local dealer the Southern GP39X, I got the class unit the 4600J
Here's what I found, my unit pretty much very nicely built, no crushed or broken handrails, no finger prints, the high hood is the
is level with the cab as it should be. Ran smoothly out of the box, but in checking the amp draw it was surprisingly a little higher
than I would expect from a Genesis, so I put it on my Bachrus rollers and opened it in both directions and that seemed to help so I'm
leaving this issue to a need for break in time.
The Tsunami sound is excellent and the Southern air horn sound is spot on to me.
My only complaint is the headlights at both ends are very very dim and if you want to dim the headlights they go completely out, LOL this must be Athearns way of saving wear and tear on the lights.
Over all I'm pretty much pleased with it

I have the same problem with an Athearn Genesis SDP45--dim headlight that goes completely out when you try to dim it. Something in the Tsunami programming, perhaps?

Athearn must be using a higher value resistor for it's bulbs to extend their service life as of late...

If they used LEDs they'd be dim to.
