Model Railroading > Work in Progress - INRD 9025 (25th Anni SD9043MAC)

I've decided after a three year hiatus, it is time to fire up the air compressor once again and wield that all mighty air brush. The model in mind this round is Indiana Railroad's 25th Anniversary painted SD90/43MAC # 9025. I'm starting with a factory painted HO Scale Kato model (#9005), picked up via Ebay for a steal. Some Gunmetal Gray, and ATSF Silver acrylic, along with a set of Highball Graphics Decals have been brought in to complete the project.

While I was waiting for my decals to arrive I started some of the model modifications, particularly around the front and rear pilots. The prototype comes with deck mounted ditchlights, and the Kato coupler boxes and draft gears are being modified and shrunk down considerably. You'll probably notice the strange seam along the frame behind the cab in the pics below. Let me explain... I have a UP painted SD90/43/MAC model kicking around as parts fodder for various projects. (It is damaged beyond repair...) I attempted to try using the gray walkways and steps from the UP model for the long hood section, while keeping the red INRD walkways and steps up front. It didn't turn out exactly as I had hoped though since the UP gray was still too light. It did end up making air brushing that darker gunmetal gray over the UP gray much easier than over bright red. The factory INRD silver trucks, fuel tank, and underframes (sills?) were swapped with the UP gray parts, again to allow for easier airbrushing, light gray to dark gray instead of bright silver to dark gray.

Again, the trucks, fuel tank, and underframe were hit with that gunmetal spray. (see above) Then the body was disassembled and masked for the gray and silver coats. Next will be the white and black pin striping, along with the other special scheme decals. The number obviously still needs to be erased and corrected on the cab, along with that bit of white stripe left behind behind the cab now that I see it is too high. I just can't do much more at the moment, the paint is still curing...

I hope someone is able to get some sound files of this quad turbo Cummins unit so models can get the proper noise in a layout setting.

Nice MACs!! Do you by chance recall what paint colors you used for the INRD unit? That demo unit is also eye catching. Does Microscale make the demo decals? Of some other source?

Indiana railroad
Red is SF red scalecoat 2.
Gray is a mix of MOW gray & UP habor mist( started with mow gray and added UP habor mist to get the right shade that we thought matched)
Underframe is Floquil Gunmetal.
Silver is Floquil Platium mist.

EMD Demo,
Microscale decal.
top blueis Conrail blue
bottom blue is Modelmaster turquoise.
