A question re Athearn's new auto racks
Author: march_hare

I see that three different NYC car numbers will be offered on the new Athearn auto racks. I'll get all three, but here's a question for all you NYC / PC fans:

I'm sure some of these cars were repainted in Penn Central colors. Has anybody seen photos of "quick and dirty" PC repaints that could be done with minimal alterations to the NYC painting and lettering? I don't want to go to the trouble of totally repainting the cars, but I would like an excuse to have more than three of them.

Sometimes I end up with double numbers and put them on separate trains

I would expect the series of books from Morning Sun would be able to address this.

Either that or a search on the usual sites on the internet would yield useful results.

If you want to remove the existing factory lettering to make your own "patched" ex-NYC racks, see this excellent tutorial here:

Full credit to "Rod1208" and Ryan M. Martin for the technique. I used red-label "Micro-Sol" as the liquid remover of choice.

Cheers,
Harry

I got the impression this was more of a prototype question, rather than a how-to.

Trying to bring this back on track; have you ever seen this commercial from 1969? It shows some PC cars but they appear to be painted PC.

*Warning* this video clip could be detrimental to the emotional stability of NYC fans or ex-employees.

So this would be a 'PC patch job' that we're looking for?

Yup, I'm looking for info on patch jobs, something I can apply to 2 or 3 cars so I can have a long string of "home road" auto racks on a circa 1974 Penn Central train.

Anybody got pix? Memories?
