Athearn GP40-2 question.
Author: tx_trainman54

I,m sure many of you that follow Athearn closer than I do these days could answer this question pretty quick. Have there been any announcements about releasing a GP40-2 with the newer angled blower bulge?

Yes a couple of the DRGW units (3129, 3130) that are coming will be the later version (wreck replacements in real life).

Here is a shot of the D&RGW #1445, which I believe was previously the #3129.

Did anyone other than SP and DRG&W have this style of GP 40-2?

The Denver & Rio Grande Western had a couple of units that were wreck at Pando, Colorado. They sent them back to LaGrange and EMD replaced the wrecked units with the only GP40-2s built in 1983. (EMD was getting ready for the GP50 model).
D&RGW 3129 and 3130 were built with the angled blower housing, and GP50 type radiator grills as well as Q type fans for the radiators and DB.
These were also the only GP40-2s on the Grande roster with the straight frame, as can be seen in the shot of the UP 1445 above.
Hope this helps. BTW these were the only GP40-2s built in 1983.

Looks like they have been pushed back to late November along with the D&RGW version. Oh well, more time to save up. I am looking forward to picking up the 1983 version along with the two earlier versions. I would have preferred Athearn offer 3 numbers in the earlier D&RGW GP40-2 and a single in the 1983 version but oh well - planning to splurge and get one with sound.

Cheers, Jim Fitch

Pando runaway was in 1989. These units were involved in the overspeed at the mouth of Byers Canyon in 1982
