question for the steam experts regarding 4-8-4's
Author: tc

I saw a video today of the new kato n scale fef that is coming out later this year and I was wondering how many different variations of the driveline for a 4-8-4 is there, the video shows how easy it is to take the boiler and cab off and I was wondering using the same driveline can alot of different variation be made like a northern pacific northern or say a ATSF 4-8-4., I sure hope if this is possible it would be nice to start seeing alot more 4-8-4 variations soon. Thanks for the info

Just to compare "active" 4-8-4s, just in drivers.

NW 611 has 70"
SP 4449 has 80"
SSW 819 has 70"
MILW 261 has 74"
ATSF 3751 has 73"
C&O 614 has 72"
UP 844 has 80"
SP&S 700 has 77"

There are others I'm sure that are being restored, but what I could think of off the top of my head as what most people would remember.

Also can use this website:

Ah yes, they were delivered with 73" and coal burning, and when rebuilt they received 80" and burned oil.

Thanks for the input on drivers maybe there will be an option to switch out drivers, all I can do is dream or switch to HO scale. Or stay away from steam

Model drivers are often a few scale inches off to accommodate brake shoe hangers. And also the fact that the model flanges are too large disquises that. That being said, as long as you have a close enough wheelbase, the valve gear matches and the cylinders are correct or can be built up, plus the right tender, anything is possible, provided you can build a boiler and cab from plastic. Of all the steam engines the probability of similarities in the late steam era are more likely with the Northern. For example, I remember the Milwaukee Road 4-8-4s were similar to another road's but can't recall what.
