Model Railroading > question for the steam experts regarding 4-8-4'sDate: 09/13/14 20:15 question for the steam experts regarding 4-8-4's Author: tc I saw a video today of the new kato n scale fef that is coming out later this year and I was wondering how many different variations of the driveline for a 4-8-4 is there, the video shows how easy it is to take the boiler and cab off and I was wondering using the same driveline can alot of different variation be made like a northern pacific northern or say a ATSF 4-8-4., I sure hope if this is possible it would be nice to start seeing alot more 4-8-4 variations soon. Thanks for the info

NW 611 has 70" SP 4449 has 80" SSW 819 has 70" MILW 261 has 74" ATSF 3751 has 73" C&O 614 has 72" UP 844 has 80" SP&S 700 has 77" There are others I'm sure that are being restored, but what I could think of off the top of my head as what most people would remember. Also can use this website: http://www.steamlocomotive.com/northern/ Date: 09/13/14 21:19 Re: question for the steam experts regarding 4-8-4's Author: coastdaylight EspeeGoldenState Wrote:

Ah yes, they were delivered with 73" and coal burning, and when rebuilt they received 80" and burned oil. Or stay away from steam

M-64 had 70", and M-68 had 73" drivers. And also the fact that the model flanges are too large disquises that. That being said, as long as you have a close enough wheelbase, the valve gear matches and the cylinders are correct or can be built up, plus the right tender, anything is possible, provided you can build a boiler and cab from plastic. Of all the steam engines the probability of similarities in the late steam era are more likely with the Northern. For example, I remember the Milwaukee Road 4-8-4s were similar to another road's but can't recall what.
