Model Railroading > New Athearn RTR SD45 with sound announced

Compatible with the Genesis motor upgrade kit. No doubt this uses the new SD40 chassis.

Road number specific details.

Coming in UP, SP Kodachrome, Southern, Frisco, NS, and D&H.

I wonder if they will spruce up the SD38 next?

The D&H units, #802 803, are the ex EMD demo's and have the L shaped windshield. They will have the full D&H paint scheme.

Curious what the difference between the new and old chassis would be.

Other than the new one can be equipped with sound...

They weren't really clear on what front window the 801 had. So I sent them an email and pointed out that the 801 has a normal windshield. They got it right the last time they did the D&H SD45s but I wanted to make sure. I also pointed out that the handbrake is different on the 801 than on the 802 & 803. They got that wrong last time.

Interesting. This is the first I've ever heard of D&H rostering SD45s. From the info on RR Picture Archives, I take it they went to EL, then back to D&H? What eventually happened to them?

All three were ex Demos. The D&H traded them to the EL for 3 U33Cs. When they eventually got them back they ran them in the EL paint but with a blue band instead of the EL maroon. They went to Mexico in 1978 with the D&Hs big Alcos.

Already got myself down for all three D&H units with the LHS....and look at the price.....$185.00 with sound. That will make it somewhere around $160 with the LHS...

One of the D&H units is still alive in Mexico wearing a coat of gray TFM paint. The horn has been moved from the forward cab mount. It is numbered 4500 (I think. I remember its a SD45 with an xx00 number and there cant be many of those!)
