Albrae Models HO scale brass SP MOW Water Cars
Author: Albrae

Albrae Models is pleased to announce Southern Pacific Maintenance-of-Way water cars in HO scale brass. SP stationed sets of these water cars at strategic locations around the railroad. Generally spotted on sidings near the various mountain passes Espee crossed, the water cars were maintained for fire-fighting use along the right-of-way and in tunnels. Although parked on sidings during much of the year, typically they were cycled back to the railroad's shops each spring for inspection and any necessary servicing. This type of movement provides the modeler a good reason to include water cars in the occasional train.

Our HO scale models will represent the car's appearance with either as-built wood plank walkways, or later-fitted steel grate walkways. Quantities limited to only 40 of each SKU number! Now accepting reservations! Expected delivery is mid to late 2015.

Model Features:
- All brass construction
- Trucks with code-88 tread semi-finescale nickel silver wheels
- Era appropriate versions:
- 1960s - '80s in light gray, wood plank walkways
- 1980s - '90s in light gray, steel grate walkways

On Saturday, November 1st, while attending the Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society convention in San Luis Obispo, my friend Clyde King and I took a short afternoon trip to check out and measure two water cars parked in Guadalupe, CA. We were successful and captured LOTS of photos, along with taking important measurements. Those will be important in the building our models, along with photos from Bob Dengler and several other contributors.

Looking forward to these as they have SP written all over them. Notice the posted photos are examples of Coast line cars, hope you have some Oregon Division examples as well. Heard you have some Siskiyou Line photos with the arched nozzle sprayer and the under car sprinklers. Interesting car.

Well, there are those Bob Dengler photos of SPMW #5486 at Colfax in August 1977; it spent time on "The Hill" (Donner Pass). Not sure where SPMW #6503 spent most of its life other than been parked in Guadalupe with #5486 for several years. Pete Arnold's SP MOW photo CD has a 2007 dated photo of the pair at Guadalupe, except the other side was facing the sun.

Not sure what ever happened to the three car set that was parked at Santa Margarita for many years. Those were the focus of Bob Zenk's excellent articles in Mainline Modeler's January/February and March 1982 issues.

I should mention SPMW #6503 still shows evidence of the half-round sprayer mounted on one end. Took lots of detail photos, will have to post one.

Regarding any Oregon Division water cars, gotta see how well these go first. Besides, I've got lots of other goodies planned, too. Be patient for more cool announcements to come. ;~P

We need some cool SP Ballast hoppers!
Like a better version of the old Bruce's Train Shop ones.
