Walther's Ferrrous Shear and Horizontal Baler/Logger models
Author: 4thDistrict

I am assembling these Walther's kits for use in my scrap yard scene:

http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3631

Can anyone describe what they do, how they work, and how they are loaded and unloaded? The instructions aren't very helpful as to how to incorporate them into the scene.

Thanks!

It kind of reminds me more of a car crusher, with that being said you would need a small crane or even a big front end loader without the bucket to lift autos into it to be flattened or turned into
square blocks.

Your first pictures is a reasonable facsimile of a Harris scrap shear. You would have a pile of unprepared scrap metal to feed into it and the output would be prepared foundry steel, usually cut into 2-5 foot lengths, depending on who is purchasing it.  The second picture is a baler used to produce baled scrap for steel mills. Usually lighter sheet metal is baled such as steel siding, wire and any other type of lighter gauge metal.  Unfortunately, the video that Ted linked isn't very accurate. Car bodies have to be processed through a shredder to have all of the plastic, glass foam and non-ferrous metals removed before they can be recycled. I suspect that scrap yard lightly bales the car bodies then ships them to a shredder for further processing. Most scrap yards crush the bodies then ship them to a shredder for further processing.
