Model Railroading > How Not to roast peanuts!!!Date: 05/20/15 22:57 How Not to roast peanuts!!! Author: TonyJ My Southern Oregon Live Steamer buddy Skip Foley sent me this amusing story about his two-truck Shay, which he built from scratch.
Tony, I stored my Shay in the garage last winter. I brought into the shop to fix the cylinder cocks and then fired up the boiler. As it heated up it started to smoke, a lot. I thought it was just burning out the old steam oil and dirt so I didn’t think about it. When I shut down the boiler it continued to SMOKE and looking down stack a faint glow was visible. When it cooled down I open the smoke door and found a pile of smoking peanuts. A packrat decided my smokebox was a good place to store his peanuts and in my rubber boot. What is the purpose of the two brackets on the pilot beam? Never seen those before? Date: 05/21/15 12:56 Re: How Not to roast peanuts!!! Author: wabash2800 What, you don't like roasted peanuts? <G>

I'll dig up a photo of his Shay and post it. - Tony Date: 05/21/15 17:23 Re: How Not to roast peanuts!!! Author: funnelfan Hillarious story! I'm wondering if the brackets are for lifting the locomotive?
