Model Railroading > Southern rr extended height cement hopper buildDate: 05/23/15 10:55 Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: tankcarsrule Southern delivered cement in 70T hoppers until their customers ask for larger loads. To solve this problem, they converted the 70T cars into 100T versions. This was accomlished by adding to the height, 100T trucks with brakes, and bracing as needed.
The model was built using two Bowser kits, brass angle, styrene and lots of rivets. Thanks for looking, Bobby Date: 05/23/15 10:57 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: tankcarsrule Date: 05/23/15 10:59 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: tankcarsrule Date: 05/23/15 11:00 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: fbe Nice work. They would never have gotten the large lettering on if they hadn't raised the height of the car.

Date: 05/23/15 11:11 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: dcmkris Gorgeous work Bobby out of curiosity do you keep track of the amount of time you have in projects?
I know I try to but often forget at least a few times per project and end up having to estimate. Kris Date: 05/23/15 11:21 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: tankcarsrule fbe, you're right on the lettering, it's big. Thank you.
Penncentral74, thank you very much. Kris, thanks. I've estimated the time on the two brass tank cars, but none sense. Regards, Bobby Date: 05/23/15 11:41 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: cf7 Outstanding job Bobbie! I love to see yor work. It inspires me to get going and do something on my railroad.
Keep those photos coing please. Thanks, Russ Date: 05/23/15 12:56 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: tracktime That is just outstanding work, Bobby!! Love it!
By the way, what brand 100T trucks are those underneath your car? Looks great! Cheers, Harry Date: 05/23/15 14:25 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: tankcarsrule Thank you Russ, your most kind.
As always Harry, thanks. The trucks are KD's with NWSL P:87 wheel sets. Regards, Bobby Date: 05/23/15 17:23 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: hartrick24 Looks great, I dream about doing work like that. Then I wake up and reality sits in...
Steve H. Date: 05/23/15 17:45 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: tankcarsrule Thank you Steve. You should have seen some of my early work, it gave me nightmares. I hit my stride in my 40s now I'm soon to be 71. Start a project that looks to hard and dig in your heels. I can't build a thing unless I'm in the mood.

Great looking model, what size Archer's are you using? Regards, Ed Date: 05/24/15 10:36 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: PatternOfFailure Great work!
Date: 05/24/15 11:18 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: tankcarsrule Thank you Ed. No Archers, those are one at a time off a Athearn snow plow.
PatternofFailure, I appreciate your comments. Regards, Bobby Date: 05/25/15 05:13 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: iaisfan Super impressive work Bobby! Great craftsmanship!
I'm not sure if you noticed though, and I feel a bit awkward pointing it out, but, uh...that's not a tank car. ;-) Joe Atkinson Council Bluffs, IA www.iaisrailfans.org/../Sub4WestEnd Date: 05/25/15 05:52 Re: Southern rr extended height cement hopper build Author: tankcarsrule Come on Joe, you need to look a little harder. Well I'll be, you're right, it's not a tank car. I have no idea how that happened, it started out as one!?!?
