Model Railroading > Can somebody explain a detail please?

Good morning all,

one of my lately purchased models (Athearn Genesis EMD SD 70 ACe #8747 UP) features a little (looks like a) mirror right beneath the engineers cab window (above the "8").
To be honest, I don't have any clue, how this would be used. Can somebody explain, please?

For watching hand signals from your conductor. You look in the front mirror and that back mirror will reflect into the front mirror.

You aim that little mirror so it reflects into the main mirror of the locomotive so you can watch your conductor ride the front steps of the locomotive.

I noticed you still have the plastic couplers, do they still stay coupled when pulling a heavy train?

To be honest.....I' m more a collector than a operator. Nonetheless
the few couple times I ran'em didn't cause any trouble.

I'm glad you asked the question!  I wasn't aware of the purpose of that mirror either.

It was also interesting to see the comparison between early and later SD70ACe phases, with the impacts of the isolated cab, move of the headlight to the nose, etc.  Really gave me a new appreciation for the work and attention to detail that Athearn put in to model things we might view as "simple" changes.  I just picked up one of their early SD70ACes, 8317, since the prototype was delivered just three weeks before my May 2005 era, and I've been very impressed with Athearn's work on these.  

On a side note, is anyone else as shocked as I am that these prototype units have now been in service for *10 years*?  They still seem brand new to me!

Folks, I only see one mirror....

There is There's a larger rectangular mirror facing back at the front of the opening windows. The second is a small square mirror facing forward at the rear of this window near the bottom corner.
