I bet many steam locomotive lovers have seen photos of steam locomotives where the railroad has added a second tender, or another tank car to cut down the number of water stops the locomotive has to make to take on water. Sometimes these extra tenders or tank cars were called canteen cars. Today my friend Skip Foley brought his homebuilt two-truck Shay to the Medford Railroad Park for a test run after not running it since last October. When he rolled the Shay down the trestle approach to transfer table I laughed when I saw a canteen hanging on his propane car.

Get that man a lower profile propane regulator. He's using a higher pressure cylinder regulator, I had to go back to see if he was running compressed air or nitrogen...

If the marking on the tank is right it's Liquid Natural Gas ( LNG )
