Model Railroading > The 2015 Penn Central - Unit Coal TrainDate: 06/29/15 08:39 The 2015 Penn Central - Unit Coal Train Author: navarch2 Given the large Adirondack Specialty Steel plant this railroad will have, I needed to assemble a few unit trains to feed it with coal, and other to feed it iron ore. The three coal trains consist of a single 30 car PC train, and a pair of 40 car NS trains. The ore train is a single 50 car set of PC ore cars.
Here are a few shots of the PC train, with the St Lawrence puller shoving it back onto the unit train track that splits the mains and the yard. The mains have not yet been fully straightened or aligned. Work has eaten too much time :( Bob Date: 06/29/15 10:22 Re: The 2015 Penn Central - Unit Coal Train Author: dcmkris Bob,
I wish those were my results when work has taken too much of my time! BTW: what cars did you use for the PC train those hoppers have a very cool look to them. I might be tempted to create my own train full to run behind my Milwaukee Road SD70ACe's & GF6C's (electric version of SD40-2) heading to the Powder River Basin. Those cars were released a while back by Atlas in foobie road names but these happened to be just what I needed - so foobie or no I bought 30 of them :) (Heck, my whole layout concept is a foobie...so why not? ) I also did not mention I have a 40 car FPPX coal train whose colors lend themseves well to PC, and have them available for coal work as well. Been slowly relettering them. The hoppers are Atlas Trainman models, found here - they ran out of both PC and PRR which is why they do not show.... http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-435-h148.aspx?pagenum=1 <phorum break> <phorum break> Bob dcmkris Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Bob, > > I wish those were my results when work has taken > too much of my time! > > BTW: what cars did you use for the PC train those > hoppers have a very cool look to them. While the PRR one's are kind of cool looking, I really like the PC one's and those Somerset one's were always a favorite of mine, even if the car is not correct.
(BTW: I'm not sure if the Somerset car is or is not correct for the prototype.) I really like unit trains and the more color in them the better, hence my love for the Oneida Western coal trains. I may have to look into painting and lettering my own cars up, perhaps I will just shop the train shows this winter and make up a grab bag of cars. If NS Topgons were not so much I would love to do a train of them up for PC, I can see a modern day version of the PC rebuilding freight cars just like the NS did.
