kitbashing a athearn U 18B

Does anyone know the "old" article about cutting up
an Athearn U23b and making a U18b from it ????
It was  either MR or some other magazine........

Thanks

It could have been Railroad Model Craftsman.

Inter mountain makes a U18B in HO scale.  Nice looking units.

It seems there was an article by Dean Foster in the March 1984 issue of Model Railroader about kitbashing a U18B from an Athearn U30B. I believe Mike Rose had an article in Model Railroad Hobbyist about building one from an Atlas U23B but I could be wrong.

Hope this helps.

The article was in RMC some years ago by Mike Rose.
He offers it on CD, images, notes, a complete how-to.

Mr arwye who posts here did one sometime ago. I think it was in the old Railroad Prototype Modeler?

Al:

You must be drinking bad whiskey tonight. I never did any U18B articles or have even attempted the model. The articles in Railroad Prototype Modeler I did were for a Rock Island C415, Maine Central GP38's and SOO GP30's.

The article on splicing an Athearn U30B into a U18B is in the August, 2003 Model Railroader.  I don't know why you'd want to go to all that work when Intermountain makes such a nice model already.  It must be the creativity in some people, and it's nice it's still there!

The Intermountain model does need the cab replaced due the the super sized cab windows on the cab sides. Unless they were fixed.

Managed to collect a kitbashed U18B.  It seemed one of artcles from Mr. Jim Six was followed to build this model.
Hope this helps,
Hiroshi
