Model Railroading > Ft. Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Caboose #096 Complete!Date: 07/28/15 18:01 Ft. Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Caboose #096 Complete! Author: bnsfsd70 Hi there,
As a follow up to this thread ( http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,3764603,3767837#msg-3767837 ), I've recently completed a second caboose for Mike Porter's Ft. Dodge, Des Moines & Southern. This time, it was the FtDDM&S #096, that began with a Walthers Gold Line LS&I caboose that I removed the cupola from, reworked the roof, detailed, repainted and weathered. The trucks are from Tahoe Model Works, the air hose is from High-Tech Details, and I'll explain the roof in the next post. The yellow paint is Scalecoat II Chessie Yellow, and shoutout to TO member IMRL for spraying that down for me. The black is Tamiya out of the rattle can and the decals came from a special run of Microscale decals that the CNW Historical Society had done. The weathering here was all done with Bragdon weathering chalks that were applied with makeup applicators and sealed in with rattle-can Dullcoat. I got this one delivered to Mike this afternoon, but unfortunately, I forgot to get some "action" photos of it in place on the layout. I'll fix that someday... Thanks for looking, - Jeff Carlson Date: 07/28/15 18:21 Re: Ft. Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Caboose #096 Complete! Author: bnsfsd70 The bulk of the work on this car came from removing the cupola, which ended up being much more work than I envisioned initially. Regardless, here's what that involved.
Photo 4: First off, I glued some braces below the opening and filled in the cupola area with .040 styrene, to be flush with the factory roofline. Photo 5: Seeing that I'm NEVER happy with my results from filling gaps with putty and sanding them, I just cut a sheet of .010 styrene to fit and glued it down over the entire roofline, one for each side of the roofwalk. The amount of time I spent cutting new roof pieces from the styrene was far less than if I were to fill and file the gaps with putty. Regarding the roofwalk, it has to be replaced as the factory one is too short, due to the cupola gap. Therefore, I went searching for a replacement, and it came from an unexpected source; an old Trains Miniature wooden reefer that I found at the local hobby shop. The side pieces of the roofwalk (above the ladder) are from the Walthers kit. - Jeff Carlson Date: 07/28/15 18:33 Re: Ft. Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Caboose #096 Complete! Author: bnsfsd70 Photo 6: In regards to my comment on the roof taking more work that I was expecting, it was entirely due to the braces shown here. I mounted two of the three flush with the edge of the roofline, which proved to be my downfall. Once I had finished the roof, I went to put it back on the car, at which point I found out that these completely interfered with the walls, keeping the roof from sitting down correctly on the body.
So I decided to file them flush, and it took some time, so I decided to get out the Dremel to speed up the process... Whoops. I'll save you the gory details, but simply remind you to just NOT brace the roof on these cars flush with the edges. While I fully understand that the "Fort Dodge" won't get modeled all that often, similar "cupulaless" cabooses could be found on the rosters of many railroads across the nation, and hopefully some of these techniques can be utilized in your projects as well! I remember seeing boxcars lettered for the Ft. Dodge Line in the 60's and have some on my layout. My grandfather was an engineer on the Chicago Great Western and among other things ran the big 800 class 2-10-4's. I have seen Mike's fine layout an it really captures that area and era nicely. Keep up the good work and don't worry about making mistakes, it's how we learn.
