attended a few of the original auctions held by Allied years ago. Is this stuff from the "original" Allied or the "Whistle stop Allied". ?

I  haven't done too many of these types of auctions. How does the cash deposit work? Do you get back the difference of what you don't buy?

You got that right, and that ORIGINAL Allied Model Trains closed for good on May 12, 2007.  The farce that went on across the street for the following 8 years was a mismanaged disaster from the day they opened the doors.

If you are referring to those magnificent, exciting, "NO RESERVE" auctions that former Allied owner and licensed auctioneer, Allen Drucker ran once or twice a year from around 1985 through 2006, over at the Arcadia Masonic Lodge, this one won't be ANYTHING like that and Drucker will not have anything to do with it.

Yes, if you do not spend your deposit amount, you should get it back, but it may be in the form of a check mailed to you a few days after the auction, I'm not sure.  This is being held by a liquidation company.  These people don't know the difference between a brass rail joiner and a brass caboose.  Stuff will be sold in large lots, usually a whole showcase full, or a whole shelving gondola full and they don't care if part is HO and part is Z scale and part is slot cars, it all gets lumped together like garbage.  If you are thinking of picking up a nice loco or two, stay home!  If you are not prepared to buy 20 or 50 locos at a shot, you will be wasting your time to attend.  However, if you are in the market for a THOUSAND decal sheets, then this will be your cup of tea.  AND, don't even THINK of test running anything.  Everything is sold "as-is," maybe it runs, maybe it doesn't.  This type of auction is not for the particular person or the faint of heart.  It will be fast, furious and there are NO second chances.  Money talks, BS walks.

So are we to understand that this auction is for the inventory, etc., of the "new" Allied Model Trains that Fred Hill, etc. owned and operated?

Yep, that's the one.  You know, the "friendly" train store.  Right.

"Friendly" train store as in occassional discounts and sales or "friendly" as in the "Southern Pacific...your friendly railroad"?

Yes the very same Fred Hill. Fredski is a mighty locomotive in the model railroad world and calls many depots home. Meanwhile, as WS and old Allied duked it out, little Arnie's took the lead by embracing 21th Century marketing. I just returned from one of its 10% off sales on locomotives. Nothing I needed but I spent $100 on structures and books that were not on sale! Attaboy Greg, the meek shall inherit the miniature world. There is a lesson for all LHS in this--"steam is dead"--so roll with the times if you want to roll at all.

Both stores serve a different kind of modeler. You can go to the Whistle Stop and get all the detail parts you need for what ever modeling project your doing. steam, diesel, rolling stock. Arnie's has got nothing. Arnie's buys used trains and sells them at cheap prices to draw people to the store. You may get a gem, or a lemon. Like you, they wind up buying items not on sale, hardly 21th century marketing.  Whistle Stop has brass, for those of us that go in that direction, Arine's, nothing, unless they buy a collection, then they sell it on Ebay. Whistle Stop sells on EBay also, or, so I have been told. Different stores, serving different interests. Be happy we have them both.
As for "steam being dead", it all depends how you look at things.

Exactly my point. No one I imagine believes that scratch building and brass are the growing segments of the hobby. Keep in mind though that WS does have an excellent slection of new and used books.

Well, the pics say it all. They left nothing on the table when it came to buying stuff. Like they couldnt say no. Look at all the crap that was clogging up those shelves....thats too bad..had they had some discipline in thier purchasing, kept it to a certain market, and not strayed too far...they might still be around..

Someone said: Exactly my point. No one I imagine believes that scratch building and brass are the growing segments of the hobby.

That may not be correct. I see a lot of interest in the under-30 age group in making their own beer, raising gardens, building with Legos, and in other hands-on skills that their moms and dads may have ignored. It would not surprise me at all to see scratchbuilding make a rebound. Brass, maybe not so much because of labor and pricing.

Go to any Prototype Modelers meeting and see what people are modeling. Look at the photos of models people have posted on this and other sites. Models are scratch built, kit bashed, brass is being bought and sold. Have a open mind, broaden your outlook, there's a lot that's going on. The older KTM brass, Max Gray, Balboa, and Westside, are in demand, not only for their low prices, but also for ttheir durability and sound construction. Throw in a can motor, and they can run with the best of them.
