Tangent Scale Models is proud to introduce our newest all-new HO scale product to our line, the Pullman-Standard PS-3 coal hopper!  Tangent Scale Models and Moloco have worked together to bring this highly-accurate product to the HO scale market, and it is available today for purchase from Tangent.  This is a Tangent Scale Models product.
 
During the 1950s, Pullman-Standard began to develop a “standardized” line of freight car product types that were marketed in “families”.  Starting with the PS-1 boxcars and PS-2 covered hoppers, the PS-3 was rolled out with several offerings, the most prolific being this 70-ton, 3-outlet coal hopper with a cubic capacity of 2750 cubic feet.  First purchased in 1957, Pullman-Standard not only had an effective marketing message with the “PS” series, but developed simultaneous production capability at both its Bessemer AL and Butler PA manufacturing plants, providing customers with a rapid response for coal hoppers that were produced at a rate of more than 13 cars per weekday during peak supply.  Such rapid-production was made possible by new welding techniques that arose from the World War II period, although this was a relatively new innovation for open hoppers at the time. 
 
Our NEW Ready to Run replicas are available at www.tangentscalemodels.com and we are selling these at the National Train Show in Portland from August 28-30, 2015!  Our first production of these coal hoppers includes these RTR schemes:
 
- Clinchfield (CRR) in the "Original FH8" scheme from 1958.  These cars were a significant addition to the Clinchfield roster for its core coal business, and the models stand out with “Clinchfield” stenciling spelled across the side panels of the all black carbody, which accurately includes heap shields.  Our fine models are available in twelve road numbers, plus unnumbered models with decals available separately from Tangent to easily create a fleet of customized hoppers.
- Great Northern (GN) in the sought-after "Original Vermillion" scheme from 1957.  These stunning cars feature the bright vermillion red carbody, complete with large “Great Northern” stenciling applied across the car side, and the Rocky logo in the left side corner.  These models include the distinctive “mineral red” trucks found on the prototype cars.  Our fine models are available in twelve road numbers, plus unnumbered models with decals available separately from Tangent to easily create a fleet of customized hoppers.
- Louisville & Nashville (L&N) in the striking "Original Dixie Line" scheme from 1957.  These cars feature the L&N brown mineral carbody with heap shields and with the “Dixie Line” lettering spelled out on the right side of the car.  It is worth noting that this was the L&N standard coal hopper design, with a humongous fleet numbering 8,150 cars built between 1957 and 1961.  While these cars were the backbone of L&N’s coal hauling operations, they were regularly seen offline in the South, Midwest, and Northeast.  Our fine models are available in twelve road numbers, plus unnumbered models with decals available separately from Tangent to easily create a fleet of customized hoppers.
- Rock Island (RI) in the smart "Original Red 1957" scheme from 1957.  These red cars feature “Rock Island” accurately spelled out across the ribs.  Our fine models are available in twelve road numbers, plus unnumbered models with decals available separately from Tangent to easily create a fleet of customized hoppers.
- Utah Railway (UTAH) is available in the “Original Black” scheme with a black carbody, and large “Utah Railway” lettering spelled out across the car.  These cars were commonly found throughout the west in odd-lot coal services, seeing service in such far away places as Puget Sound branchlines in Washington State.  Our fine models are available in twelve road numbers, plus unnumbered models with decals available separately from Tangent to easily create a fleet of customized hoppers.
- Undecorated RTR cars are available painted primer gray, and are available in two flavors – with and without heap shields.
- Undecorated Kits are also available in two flavors – with and without heap shields.

The Utah Rwy coal cars will be welcome by me Dave! 

I am working on building a Utah Rwy coal train for the 70's and 80's pulled by the Alco RS4/5 diesels.  Atlas made the diesels in HO, which I have 3 from the first run (one is a duplicate number) but danged if I can find any numbers from the 2nd run - the treasure hunt continues. 

The only coal cars I could find prior this in HO that seem appropriate were the Bowser 100 ton 3-bay coal cars painted for UP and the Tangent Bethlehem 3600 cuft H-100-16 UP painted quad hoppers which I have acquired some of.  Your new hoppers will be a great addition to help build a realistic Utah coal train!  Thanks!

BTW, it's hard to find photo's of the Utah Rwy coal cars.  Do you have any links to any?

Did any of Erie, DL&W, LV, or RDG have these cars on their roster?

I think NYC and P&LE had similar cars . . . might have been built by Greenville, though.
