Allied Train Store Burns...strange timing.

Fire has extensively damaged a recently closed model train store in Culver City, authorities said Friday

The fire at the former Allied Model Trains store in the 4300 block of Sepulveda Boulevard was reported at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, Culver City Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Nagy told a news videographer at the scene. Flames were visible from the front of the store when firefighters arrived, Nagy said.

The fire was knocked down in five minutes, but the store was severely damaged, Nagy said.

The company that owned the store declared insolvency and closed the premises on July 7 after 69 years in business, according to its website.

A witness who gave his name as Edward told the videographer he saw a model train set ablaze inside the store.

Very depressing exterior view of the fire. I was looking forward to the auction next month for some of their larger display buildings. In a way, it is a sad commentary on how our own railroad "empires" will also be gone when we go to that big extra board in the sky.

Very depressing to hear the news.
I was a veteran of the store when it was located on Pico Blvd. near Westwood.

Has the fire department said if arson was the cause of the fire?

To the best of my knowledge, Mr. Drucker still owns the little Allied building and leased it to the now belly-up new Allied partnership.

I hope you guys aren't implying foul play here. Back in the old days some businesses that were in trouble would stage a fire and feign that their books caught on fire in the process so they could make up some numbers for the insurance company. I suppose in this day and age your computer and invoices could burn up without any offsite backup...

Not to beat this to death, but I suppose the auction is off, unless they already moved this stuff to an auction site?

The auction is off.  Heavy smoke damage, some fire & water damage to the store inventory.  Plus, the building is not suitable for much of anything at this time, let alone something like a public auction.

Without taking anything away from other fire departments around the country, Culver City FD is an outstanding organization and my hat is off to them for taking this fire down quickly and with minimal damage to the Allied building and no damage to surrounding structures.
