Q on BNSF Color Change
Author: NSTopHat

All:

I am wondering if anyone can define when, either via a specific date, a locomotive order number or locomotive road number, when BNSF switched from orange and green to orange and black on NEW locomotive deliveries. I have seached through Loco Photos and the artistic photography does not provide me a clear answer. It appears to me that some of the ES44DC's that were delivered in the Power Wedgie scheme were delivered in orange and green. My concern is geared towards a couple of projects utilizing HO Scale Tower 55 BNSF ES44DC's. What I am hoping for are a couple of Power Wedgies that were painted orange and green, rather than orange & black.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I believe the switch from green to black occurred when the BNSF went
to the "Swoosh" logo.  If you can pin that down, you'll know.  I doubt
any of the "Swoosh" engines got green.  But, it's your railroad and you can
do that if you please.

When the name changed from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad to just BNSF under Matt Rose.

When the logo changed to the "swoosh", "wedge", "powerbar", or whatever you want to call it is when the colors changed from green to black.  All units with that logo are black and orange.

Tagging onto what SP_8299 mentioned above, and copying what I wrote on the Western Board...

To be clear... No factory delivered BNSF Railway ES44DCs exist in the physical world with Heritage II orange and green paint sporting the black 2005 Power Wedgie logo. There were 88 first order BNSF ES44DCs delivered in early 2005 with the full "H2" scheme found also on over 1000 BNSF C44-9Ws. These 88 gevos were in production before the official announcement of the company name and logo change, and came complete with the H2 style yellow lettering and yellow cigar band across the nose, no wedge logos.

H2 BNSF ES44DCs
BNSF 7650-7686 (built between Jan. & Feb. 2005)
BNSF 7688-7694 (built Feb. 2005)
BNSF 7696-7700 (built Mar. 2005)
BNSF 7702-7743 (built between Mar. & May 2005)

All units produced from the middle of May 2005 onward have been delivered in black and orange paint with the contemporary black wedge logo. There is no green, it's an optical illusion brought on from light reflection and weathering over time.

Now, there is one black and orange "H3" ES44DC unit today with the older yellow H2 BNSF logos at least on the side. BNSF 7816 (blt 03/10) had most of its central engine doors and surrounding engine compartment housing swapped earlier this year with parts from a donor H2 unit. So you can get away with a 50/50 unit if your good with masking and painting.

Robbie

Thanks for the insightful information. I was thinking that this was the case, but there were just enough images on Locophotos that are borderline enough to have asked the question.
