SP 10401 PS coffeshop/diner circa 1962.
Author: SP3800

this is a continuation of my 10200 project i did that year. I found a S. Soho 10400 SP coffeshop/diner for 40.00, which I then discarded the floor, scratch-built a new under frame out of styrene, (see Page 405 on the SP passenger cars series vol. 4 on diners) to resemble 10401 circa1962-1971. first picture shows it coupled to the 10200 diner and the second, shows the diner side of the car. I made the car look a little worn.

Enjoy

As an aside, the 10401 ended up in wreck train service at Carlin, Nevada. It had been at Ogden before that.

I toured the car in the mid 90's as a potential museum acquisition. It still had the original Pullman fluted siding on the car. The pantry had been cut through into the kitchen and the original stove was still in the car. It also still had the lighting valance running down the center of the dining room.

It had the usual problem with electrolysis between the siding and the carbody, especially in the hallway outside the kitchen. You could tap on the side of the car and flakes of rust would fall out. Life in retirement in Nevada had been somewhat kind to the car. Sadly, the museum passed on getting the car.

It ended up being sent to Jim Dobbas yard at Antelope and then was sold off to a private owner at a ranch up in the Sacramento Valley, where I believe it sits today.

Sister car 10400 also survives.
