eBay Pick O' the Day
Author: hogheaded

Like many of you, I spend too much time on eBay (wife's characterization), but these days mostly for amusement value, as I own one of everything (wife, again).

So here's my eBay Pick O' the Day, the $200 Atlas plastic lumber yard (previous, the $1000 Genesis F7).

Please feel free to present your own personal selection, but it must be from the last 24 hours.

It's only worth what some idiot is willing to pay for it. I have three of these kits, at some point in the future I plan to cut them up and make one long storage shed for my lumber yard. Remember Ebay's sellers favorite word - RARE!!!! I bought mine at a flea market and paid $5 each about 10 years ago.

Funny thing Atlas still makes this kit probably around $24 at your local hobby shop lol

If it sells at that price, I'll start slapping kits together like no tomorrow!

My wonderment is how anyone, even from Planet XK-29, could judge a cheap plastic building as being worth a King's ransom. That's the power of greed, I guess. I wonder if the seller would be willing to buy some of my Athearn blue boxes, at say $50 apiece, for resale at $150?

So, nobody's found any other amusing eBay listings of late?

Yeah, you find a reasonable price on something, but the seller wants to hammer you with shipping... and "economy" shipping at that. I wonder what the seller would want for two day shipping?

How about this one, #3 in today's most-expensive list: A "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity to own this "hand made masterpiece" for a mere $11.2K? I'd jump on it, except that the seller only offers local pick-up - in Germany. Well, I'm suspecting that it'll still be available the next time that I visit Munich to buy one of those dirt-cheap BMW's.

Well, it DOES include two engines and seven cars. Of course, even adjusted for inflation, this amounts to more than I spent during my first half century in the hobby, so...

...but it does amount to about two weeks-worth of spending after discovering eBay.

But do they actually sell for $500-$1000, Tom? Someone is listing one of my books (used) on Amazon for $1033.... One of my dealers has the same book, new, next to that one for $54 Yes, I'm running low and when they are out I won't reprint, but....$1033? (You can get them through off my website for $39.95 plus $5.00 shipping and any applicable sales tax.)

$1033 sounds like a hefty markup, alright. Have you considered undercutting him by raising your retail price to $999?

I don't really know...but I have seen listings come and go from different vendors. I don't know if they actually sold or just gave up on trying to sell for that ridiculous price. I've also seen the rare hardcover version of my books for a ridiculously high price. In that case, they really are rare, since I have never printed a hardcover edition. Apparently, someone had a copy and had it rebound to make it rare and expensive.

On the other hand, I have a copy of Method for Orchestra Arranging by Glenn Miller. Copies of this usually run around a few hundred bucks. I've seen several for over $1000. I got mine for $12 including shipping from a used book store that apparently had no idea it really was rare.

Actually, I have this set and that price is about spot on.  The two locomotives sell for $2600-$3600 total and the passenger car set that's also in that auction sells for another $1700-$2500.

I think we've got some serious money laundering going on here or the Sheiks in Saudi Arabia don't know what something is worth...<G>

Hey what about old Dorseys, Miller, Kyser & etc. 78's, including a lot of "rare" ones recorded in GB? I have 3500 pristine platters, courtesy of my brother. I've been told that they were worth something 20 years ago, but now their highest and best use is as ship ballast. This so?
