Model Railroading > A little work from the back shopsDate: 04/28/16 19:31 A little work from the back shops Author: engine3420 Finished creating a Southern Pacific C26 # 3443 Consolidation in HO scale. Used a Balboa C9 as a starting point. The C26 has not been available from a commercial builder.
The F4 was completed using a boiler from a PSC F4. All I had was the painted superstructure, no Smoke box front or cab. Scrounged up an old LMB chassis from some old 2-10-2 model. The cab was made from a MDC Harriman cab from their 2-8-0. It was in plastic so I sent it out to Valley Brass & Bronze and they burned it out in Brass. Much like the lost wax process except the plastic was vaporized instead of the wax pattern. Then I re sized it to fit the front cab wall and platform of the PSC structure. I very much appreciate the effort and amount of work you have put into SP models.
Well done!! SV Date: 04/28/16 20:10 Re: A little work from the back shops Author: MMD Put an 'MV' lens in the headlight and that will really finish off the locos.
Malcolm New Zealand Date: 04/28/16 23:57 Re: A little work from the back shops Author: funnelfan Those are some great looking models that I realize you put a ton of work into. But the one issue that caught my eye right off the bat is that those headlights look like they are a little too low on the smokebox front.

Date: 04/29/16 07:09 Re: A little work from the back shops Author: Frisco1522 I've been using a trick for the last 50 years on headlights and find they look great. I've been putting bulbs in mine and they have the old "Golden Glow" look to them.
I bought some cotton tipped applicators with wood shanks I still have some Brasso left over from when I was in the Army back in the '60s. What I do is snip the wooden shank of the "Q" tip about a 1/2" from the end, chuck it in a Dremel tool, dampen the cotton with Brasso. About 15 seconds work will bring the reflector to a mirror brass finish. Since I use the same headlights on all my Frisco engines, I made a punch for punching out the glass front and there you have it. They certainly inspire me to continue on with my SP P-11 4-6-2 using an old NWSL 4-6-2. I'd never thought of using a plastic cab for a "lost wax" pattern. I knew that I had a stash of Roundhouse SP cabs for some reason or another...

Thanks for showing us. Date: 04/29/16 14:21 Re: A little work from the back shops Author: Frisco1522 The SP models are excellent! Not many of us dinosaurs doing this any more.
