Model Railroading > RailboxesDate: 05/01/16 18:36 Railboxes Author: Skuat Here are some Railboxes that I did up recently. They are all Atlas Trainman cars. All of the cast on grabs were removed and replaced with wire. Also, new crossover platforms and cut bars from Plano were added. The draft gear was cut off and moved inward to represent a non-cushioned underframe, and Kato ACF trucks were swapped out for the Atlas trucks. Each car was stripped and repainted using a variety of Microscale sets and then weathered using artists oils and some acrylics mixed in as well. The graffiti was painted using One Shot lettering enamels.

PQM Date: 05/01/16 20:07 Re: Railboxes Author: inCHI Exceptional work. You are saying that you used an airbrush for the graffiti, including the outline of the letters? That is pretty incredible.
Date: 05/01/16 21:20 Re: Railboxes Author: EspeeROW Really nice job! You painted the graffiti too? Wow...its so authentic looking; one might suspect you've been practicing on the prototype! Lol

Date: 05/02/16 00:58 Re: Railboxes Author: Hookdragkick Finally! That's what's up. Painted graff is the way to go; it's easier to fade the color too if you don't want a fresh look. You killed it :: thumbs up ::.
...and this passed Friday, I was standing across a cut of Railboxes admiring those "clapped-out, rolling billboards". Deja Vu! Posted from Android Date: 05/02/16 06:17 Re: Railboxes Author: Dilworth wow awesome job beautiful

That is pretty incredible. While I have done some airbrushing of graffiti, none of the pieces on these cars was done using an airbrush. The base colors are done with a variety of small brushes and the outlines are done using either a small brush or a drafting tool called a ruling pen, which I load with thinned down enamels. As for the stuff that I have done with an airbrush, I mainly use it for doing base blends, in which case I will cut out a mask and apply it to the side of the car, but even with that, I still do the outlines with a brush or ruling pen. Below is a shot of an autorack and a Maine Central boxcar that I did with an airbrush. Thanks for all the compliments, glad you guys enjoyed the pics. Scooter Date: 05/02/16 17:23 Re: Railboxes Author: Hookdragkick Love the rack. I've worked in same yard that GETS, BOZO and the others frequent. I want to try the enamels you mentioned; already started googling.
