Model Railroading > Some progress on my HO scale SP DD35Date: 07/24/16 17:19 Some progress on my HO scale SP DD35 Author: trainworm Finally started to add the decals today. Got one side done. But i just discovered i used the wrong stancions for the handrails lol. Oh well. Still need to figure out how to add louvers to the battery boxes.
Then it's on to powering. I don't need to power this thing, but i had a spare motor and board so i have to challenge myself. I decided to have one truck powered and one dummy. I chopped down one flywheel so it would fit and I'll have to mount the circuit board on the other side and run wires back and forth. Should be fun. I am probably going to run into really bad vibration problems due to the uneven flywheel where i chopped it down. Hey, some old Geeps felt and sounded like they were going to rattle themselves apart in run 3 or 4. You've installed a very prototypical feature, I'd say. That's going to be one cool battleship rattling around your layout. EO Date: 07/25/16 07:59 Re: Some progress on my HO scale SP DD35 Author: fbe Have you thought about using a pair of shorter motors from switch engine models to power both trucks? The ones from Athearn SW1200s or Kato NW-2 diesels with only one flywheel should squeeze right in.

But this is what i had on hand and i am too broke to buy another one. But at 84 bucks each it would be an expensive experiment.

They go on just like decals, because they are decals, but with 3D resin louvers on top of the decal film. See here for a link: http://www.archertransfers.com/AR88086.html Best Regards, Harry Date: 07/25/16 20:32 Re: Some progress on my HO scale SP DD35 Author: trainworm tracktime Wrote:

Didn't have a smaller wire, but these are nice and flexible and fit just fine. I've been tempted to buy a couple..... Date: 07/28/16 16:14 Re: Some progress on my HO scale SP DD35 Author: trainworm Finally got my new controller in today and got to test run the DD. It runs pretty well, but with some clicking coming from the gear box at low speeds. I discovered that i had to remove all the gears from the dummy truck to get it to run smooth.
Can't believe it all actually works lol. Finally test ran the mad max loco and it works great. Tested the GP50T and discovered i installed the circuit board backwards. Also a good shot of the battery box louvers. I took this shot at City of Industry in August 1976.-BMT

Is the spill markings over the tank battery acid, or something else? These were retired a few years before I got into the hobby. I never saw one, but now I starting to want one. I have a couple friends that are each building one. Trainworm, I'm sure you've inspired many with your efforts. Larry Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 07/30/16 12:22 by Larry020. Taken at Walnut (Ca.) May 1977. The third photo showing the DD from my first post with one of those "only on the SP' lash ups-BMT Date: 07/30/16 14:40 Re: Some progress on my HO scale SP DD35 Author: trainworm Yep, the battery box was just on one side. The big dawg shell has an air tank in that space so you have to chop it off and move it to the other side. I put the archer louver decals on last night and threw some paint on them. The look pretty damn nice. Too bad my painting sucks.
