Model Railroading > Athearn Illinois Terminal SD39Date: 08/21/16 18:02 Athearn Illinois Terminal SD39 Author: kevink Here's a few shots of one of the pair of Athearn ITC SD39s I picked up from the hobby shop last weekend. I really need to build a short stretch of track that I can take outside like 'runningextra' used for his photos in the thread below. Never the less, the warm afternoon sun the other day was too nice to pass up.
Date: 08/21/16 18:23 Re: Athearn Illinois Terminal SD39 Author: icancmp193 I have fond memories of seeing those almost every day during my short tenure in Lincoln, IL. Very tempted to order a pair....just because!

These were the only ITC diesels to get a gong bell. Attached is a Dick Wallin photo (I picked up the same slide years ago at a show. Fortunately Keith saved me the toruble of scanning it ). ITC 2301 shortly after delivery in June 1969 at Springfield. Props to Athearn for making sure the sound units have the correct audio file installed! NZ Edited 1 time(s). Of course you really cant go wrong with an engine that is painted green & yellow even if it is the wrong shade! Scott Date: 08/23/16 06:14 Re: Athearn Illinois Terminal SD39 Author: Atsf814 Good looking model! Thanks for sharing!

Far too many variables, lighting, camera settings, screen settings, was the picture digital or film converted, the source site and on and on. Chad, the mention of the shade of green & yellow is because I model the MKT Railroad, not that the shade of green is off for an IT locomotive...... Scott Date: 08/24/16 10:33 Re: Athearn Illinois Terminal SD39 Author: Trainatic Tom - I just checked on ebay and there are vendors that still have these units for sale. Seems like they have sold very well and hopefully this will show the suppliers to come out with more Illinois Terminal.
Joe Date: 08/24/16 17:55 Re: Athearn Illinois Terminal SD39 Author: kevink The thought occurs to me that I have an Athearn ITC SW1500 somewhere in a box in the basement. That'll look pretty cool with the two SD39s. Now if I can only remember about where I put it...

I assume now they were probably rotating units to Peoria. Tom Y Date: 08/26/16 14:11 Re: Athearn Illinois Terminal SD39 Author: U30CG IT regularly mixed their SW1500's with other road power. They were ordered with road trucks, full handrail packages and large fuel tanks for just that purpose. They were just a funny looking GP7 as far as the IT was concerned. You could see some crazy looking consists on that outfit. The SD39's were defintiely the highlight of the final diesel roster.

You could even catch them occasionally leading the SD39s and GP38-2s on the road trains, at least once that I know of running cab-first! Some other roads also included road-worthy SWs in consists to allow for road trains to perform en-route switching on spur tracks that could not handle the "big power". The SW could be broken off to do the required work and put back in the consist when finished. During the extremely brief time the EJ&E ran directed service of the Rock Island between Joliet, IL and Peoria, the daily road freight to and from Peoria was always powered by a GP38-2 and either a SW1200 or SW1001. The SW was used to switch the chenical plants at Henry, IL while the Geep stayed put on the main. Here is EJ&E Peoria Subdivision Train No. 101 (yes, it had a timetable schedule) westbound at Bureau, IL in May 1980. Behind GP38-2 701 is SW1001 445, which will go to work when they arrive at Henry, 14 miles south. My photo. NZ |
