Model Railroading > Fantastic new reference book Shipping Planes On TrainsDate: 09/19/16 13:58 Fantastic new reference book Shipping Planes On Trains Author: arwye Found this at the GNRHS Spokane convention. I bought a copy. It is simply fantastic. This big find was a brand new book, self published, by Andrew Klamka, who works for Boeing. He has written the encyclopedia on "SHIPPING PLANES ON TRAINS" Vol. 3, circa 1946 to about 1990. 502 pages, very high quality, loaded with color and b&W photos, including car interiors, tables, rosters, and diagrams. It covers all the railroads that were shipping airplane parts for all the military and commercial builders.
You can only buy it through Andrew. PM me and I will forward his e-mail address. Cost is about 50 bucks. I also bought his vol. 2 which covers the 2nd world war years, but it is not as extensive as this Vol. 3. Seven Chapters….each covers how parts were shipped around the country for manufacturing the following airplanes. 1- Aviation in the Post War Years-B-50, C-97, KC-97, C-82, C-119, B-36 2- The Korean & Cold War, B-47, B-52 3- Commercial Jet Age begins, 707, KC-135, C-130, C-141 4- Boeing 737 5- Boeing 747 6- New Era of Travel 757, L-1011, DC-9, MD-95, B1B, 767, C-5, DC-10 7- Train vs. Plane. For anybody wanting to build models of these cars, this is the ultimate reference. Richard Yaremko Wow, sounds cool! Does he cover the "skyboxes" Southern Pacific owned and operated from the 1960s until the end? If he does, I'm sold. :) Date: 09/19/16 16:31 Re: Fantastic new reference book Shipping Planes On Trains Author: arwye Yes it does. Pages 114-125 cover the SP's movement of C-141 tail sections, with four full page color views of the Sky Box.

Chris Date: 09/19/16 16:53 Re: Fantastic new reference book Shipping Planes On Trains Author: gandydancer4 Couldn't agree more. This book is UTTERLY FANTASTIC. I found out about this book on the Modern Freight Car List on yahoo.com. I contacted Andrew and got all 3 volumes. He has limited #s of Volume 1 and 2 but the 3rd volume is the one we will all crave as it covers all the modern freight cars. And Andrew, if you're on Train Orders, I'd like to publically apologize for not posting any information about your books here. Folks, if you're into trains hauling planes, your ship has just come in. (Sorry I couldn't find a way to include automobiles in that pun :-)

I sent him a check and he sent me a book. It was very easy. The OP offered Andrew's contact info via PM. I can do the same. Paul edit: Found his contact info online: https://issuu.com/mennonitepressinc./docs/shipping_planes_on_trains It is for Volume 2 but will be the same for whichever volume you want. Edited 2 time(s). can you provide e-mail address for ordering the Boeing book. Thanks and greatings from italy Markus Date: 09/20/16 17:59 Re: Fantastic new reference book Shipping Planes On Trains Author: chakk I am a bit surprised that the author hasn't arranged to have copies of the book made available through one of those self-printing-on-demand companies, such as lulu.com
Then, when he runs out (as inevitably will happen) of his own supply, the book will remain available for others to purchase. And he gets the royalties. Date: 09/20/16 21:49 Re: Fantastic new reference book Shipping Planes On Trains Author: steeplecab Another vote for this spectacular volume. The issuu.com web link has Andrew's email address on the page. (Note that the mailing address is not correct, but the email hasn't changed.) The book was discussed previously on the Modern Freightcars List. I can say without hesitation that Andrew is very good to deal with. He is currently gathering information for a possible Volume 4.
As for publishing on demand, I suspect Andrew would be concerned about the quality of printing. Volume 3 has some of the highest quality printing I have found, better than most books we see on such a focused hobby. steeplecab Helena |
