Trying to figure out where the coal cars came from or what they were doing up in the sky.  Off a bridge? or the upper track in the photo?

Yeah, there is an upper level that follows directly above the lower level. At the moment, the upper level is simply powered track and cork on a 5" wide plywood base attatched to the upper deck framework. So, if you have a bad day up top, your equipment can plummet the 20-24" down to the lower level. Members are aware of the risks, and guardrails are not in place at this time. Scenery simply takes a little longer on such a large layout.

What happened in the first derailment?  Head end stop and DPUs kept right on pushing?

Shoving too long/heavy a manifest around a tight curve, through switches.

Actually, the cause is a curse on the BN and MP beer cars.  They went over on their sides a couple weeks ago. and again last week, so naturaly, the wreck happened where they were.

Also it is good to see that karma still works.  The operator who got the biggest kick out of someone else becoming the first to have a train go off the upper level onto the lower level became the first to bomb another train on the lower level on Friday night.  And today, the person who took photos of the Friday night bombing becomes the first person to sucessfully bomb a train on the mainline.

Those Rio Grande hoppers coming off the upper level took the term "Flying Rio Grande logo" literally.

Looks like older WKW Bethlehem coal hoppers; if they were the newer ($$$) Exactrail versions, you probably would have been talking owner DG down from the roof.
