CSX Road Slug #2300 I Actually Finished It! Part I
Author: australianterrier

Built a CSX GP30 road slug out of Proto 2000 model I bought on e-Bay.

The before as it arrived on my doorstep. The poo brown color sums up the model. At least I didn't pay a lot of money for it.

Looks great! I built one of those out of a Rail Power GP35 years ago, and it was certainly a bit of a project.

How did you remove all the hood doors?  Sandpaper and lots of elbow grease?

On the prototype CSX cut out the door sections and replaced the body with flat sheet steel. I basically did the same thing only using plastic sheet.

Nice! Does it need a "mother unit" to move? I knew a guy that did a road slug and he had cables connected to a GP40-2 in order for the GP30 slug to run. This was HO scale.

The mother unit on the prototype is GP40-2 #6912, I'm starting with an Athearn Genesis with sound Chessie GP40-2. It is somewhat "easy" to convert into more modern CSX. Removethe Chessie/C&O rock plow, modify MU connection, ditch lights fore and aft, plus the slug connections. The Athearn model has the correct exhaust silencer and Q-fans, etc.

Nicely done!  I didn't look close enough to notice the blank section where the doors would be until I scrolled down to your in progress photos .
