Oops - Did anybody proofread the Feb. 2017 MR cover?
Author: nkp759

Yesterday I received my Feb. 2017 issue of Model Railroader.
Guess what date appeared on the cover... February 2016

No mistake, after the folks in WI dropped the as yet to be paid for Talgo trains, they seriously cut back on public education as well. But not to worry, the jobs are coming back to them in the form of heavier than usual cheese production, due to the Swamp thing's soon to be banned imported French cheese which has been taking away American farmers' jobs since at least 1776!

Yes, Oregon does. Same for the entire Left Coast. There must be something in the milk.

MILK FROM CONTENTED PACIFIC NORTHWEST COWS!"

"In 1907, the promotional phrase "Carnation Condensed Milk, the milk from contented cows" was introduced. This slogan referred to the higher quality milk from happy cows grazing in the lush Pacific Northwest." Source: Wikipeda.

Trains had the same date. Publications generally date their magazines for the following month, or, in the case of weeklies, for the Monday following the date the mag is released... Dailies, like newspapers, have the day's date.
Sometimes mistakes are made - when my wife and I bought the weekly Mojave Desert News years ago, our first issue was a masterpiece of which we were really proud, until a friend walked in to the office and pointed out the previous  week's date on the masthead!

Hopefully, the California Dairy Industry properly compensated the organization and/or people responsible for the original idea.... or it was just another idea theft posing as "innovation (in advertising)."

I have to vouch for the PNW dairly products, as I sometimes go out of my way to purchase Tillamook ice cream at local grocery stores. Due to plenty of rainfalls and spontaneous growth of vegetation, there seems to far more "free ranging" cows in the PNW than in California. With some exceptions, California seems to be dominated by cows locked up inside crowded Bovine Industrial Complexes ("ranches"), being fed rations in unsanitary environment... so I thought California's "Happy Cows" ads were cheap shots against the allegedly "freezing" cows (in Wisconsin).

Too bad about the date screw up at Kalmbach. Seems there's always a reminder for industries to go back to basics, and not get lost in too many "ideas" and lose focus.

+1 on Tillamook cheese.

The MR staff list is pretty short these days and they seem to be pulled in several directions. Tough to stay on top of things, but that's why they hire people with publishing backgrounds.

On the MR facebook page Neil said they know about the mistake and to get over it. Things happen.

Ah, Neil is doing the Jedi hand wave?  Never mind the mistake on the cover...  these are not your magazines...

I guess journalism isn't what it used to be.  Old school journalism was to go over everything in print with a fine tooth comb, especially a cover or front page from what I recall and mistakes were rare.

Ah perhaps Kalmbach will get more sales as these will become  collector's items? <G>

Being in the publishing business, I know that stuff happens but this one would seem to stare you in the face. I seem to recall a typo on one of Railfan & Railroad's covers in recent years but it wasn't a date.

NO! It wasn't a "typo" either!! It was an "F" Bomb that some tagger had put on a stone bridge abutment! Either the Photographer AND the Editors missed it, OR, the Photographer slipped it in on purpose and the Editors missed it! Of coarse the "photo purist" here on TO.com would not approve of altering the image to clone-paint it out!!!!!

Rusty:

The typo I was referring to on a Railfan & Railroad cover was a misspelling.  I no longer have my R&R, as I gave them to someone, and I don't remember the exact details.
I was not aware of the F-Bomb you are referring to.

Actually Trains has the correct dates, but indeed MR is off a year on the February issue.  I can' comment on the January issues.

My wife the professional proofreader and copy editor says this is a mistake that gets made once. (And she did make it.) After that its one of the things that internalized and automatically checked. It took her about 5 seconds to find it on the MR cover :)
