Penn Central 1974 Cincinnati Line - L&N Transfer
Author: penncentral74

It's 1974 on my Cincinnati Line Penn Central HO layout.

A westbound transfer from Sharon Yard heads back to L&N's DeCoursey yard behind 3 U23B's crossing over the Southbound lanes of I-75 in Arlington Heights OH.

Nice work.  Do you have the Ohio RIver Bridge and Queensgate on your railroad?

I like the weathering on the locomotives, the bridge and the concrete abutments.......

No, 1974 was before Queensgate was in operation.

My layout stretches from Ivorydale Junction OH (NA Tower) to CP ARMCO (Middletown OH).

It's based on the 'transfer' scheme of operations prevalent in the area at the time.  I host DT&I, L&N, SOU, N&W and PC operation with inter-yard transfers to the 6
scattered yards in the Cincinnati Area.

Hello Penn

Just curious, how did you come to pick that section of track?

Larry,

I grew up in the area, and spent a lot of time by this stretch of track while working with my Father.  It seems I couldn't make a trip for him without crossing or paralleling this track.  At that time, I knew little about the history of the ex-NYC line, but when I built a new house with a big basement I studied several options for a layout.

My first choice was the Conrail Western Branch from the Ohio River to Columbus, but there was no industry on that line.  Second choice was the Columbus & Xenia (C&X) branch of the PRR from Cincinnati to Columbus, but it was all single track with ABS and only a few sidings.  I fell in love with NYC 'tri-color' signals and the first time I saw a limited clear aspect at an interlocking on the way back from an operating session, I fell in love with NYC's speed-based signaling and CTC layout.

I really like the heavy-transfer style of operations, even though at the time it was counter-productive for the railroads in the area.  It gives me multiple opportunities to model the era I remember when I was just getting out of High School.

I take it this location represents the overpass just north of where the Cross County Highway now crosses I-75?

Yes.

I recognized the bridge before I looked at the caption, of course I can hear trains on this line from my house and drove both my own car and Metro buses under that same bridge many times. Really nice stuff you have on the 1974 Penn Central layout. I though about trying to do a real location for a layout but think it would be too tough. You do a great job of replicating certain locations you make it look easy.

Jim
