Model Railroading > Remember the Drive in's?Date: 03/24/17 14:58 Remember the Drive in's? Author: Bob3985 So here we are on the Sherman Hill Model Railroad Club's Mall layout of the Cheyenne and Green River Railroad.
Reminescing back in the day we see here our drive in movie theater featuring John Wayne in "Tall in the Saddle". In the second scene a coal train powered by a DRGW tunnel motor flies past the movie goers. Finally is a view of the UP 4005 on display in the farm spur by the movie theater. If you are ever in Cheyenne be sure to come visit us in the Frontier mall on weekends and take a look at what we have on display. I have memories, including the reason I missed the final scenes in "The Bridge on the River Kwai" which is not suitable for this forum....

Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA Date: 03/27/17 09:11 Re: Remember the Drive in's? Author: fbe I do remember coming in riding in the trunk of a car to save admission.
There was also the Planet of the Apes trilogy which ran nearly from dusk to dawn. We had several carloads in a group with trash bags of home made pop corn and a full case of Cold Duck. A good time was had by all. My aunt and uncle had a small dairy operation in Renton, WA next to a drive in so they built a platform next to the drive in fence where all us cousins slept out during the summers. That worked well with the loud speaker from the concession stand. We could climb down the fence to get our drinks at the concession stand where all the staff knew my cousins by name. Date: 03/28/17 09:58 Re: Remember the Drive in's? Author: Jason-Rose I had a teacher in Middle School that built a very similar scene with a TV. He brought it to school for Christmas to show off. Most kids thought it was lame. I, however, had a new respect for the guy.
Jason Rose Spring, TX Rio Grande Explorations Date: 03/28/17 10:31 Re: Remember the Drive in's? Author: SPDRGWfan I think a few drive-in's still exist in places don't they - as sort of a nostalgia thing?
I think the first drive-in I can remember going to was in Davis California where I lived from 6th grade through early college; there was a drive-in out side of town on the south side of Interstate 80 where I saw Posiden Adventure when it came out although most movies I saw were at the Varsity theater down town and it's sister theater. I think I also went to a drive-in at Woodland California, which is 10 miles north of Davis (another bedroom community to Sacramento). I saw the Igor Sanction with my cousins at a Pueblo Colorado drive-in a few years later. Of course the sound quality of the speakers you hung on your window didn't sound great but it was a thing we did back in the 1970's. I think everyone who was a teenager in the '50s recalls well, and fondly, the old make out pits. I guess one could say most of us saw the beginning of the movie, maybe even the first feature of the usual double bill........but soon, sooner the better for most of us, the iconic feature of drive ins was seen all over the lot, steamed up windows! Later, when we were raising our family, the old drive in still existed here in the Monterey area, and we, with our three kids, loved going to the drive in. We had an old Ford van (yes, we had manners, and parked at the rear of the lot), parked with the rear facing the screen, had our snacks and drinks etc.......the little ones were allowed to stay up as long as they liked, but typically were fast asleep not long after the first movie started. A great institution, now pretty much extinct. AA Stanford White Carmel Valley, CA Date: 03/28/17 16:26 Re: Remember the Drive in's? Author: chakk Last I checked there was still a drive-in just west of Alamosa, Colorado. There is also a Best Western motel adjacent to the drive-in, which offers rooms with a view of the screen and sound speakers in the room to enjoy the show.
