MTH HO steam engine questions
Author: suvart

I recently got an MTH GS6, and overall I am happy with it. I just have a few questions.

1. The gap between the tender and the locomotive seems unprototypically large, does anyone have a way to shorten the drawbar?

2. How do I turn off the random radio noises? It's extremely annoying, not to mention as far as I know SP didn't have radio equipped Gs units.

3. The lettering seems awfully small, at least to my eye. And the font doesn't seem right. Is this correct?

I don't own one of these, but that said:

1) Is there a pin on the tender that goes in a hole in the drawbar? If so, just drill a new hole in the draw bar.

2) I don't know. If you've already checked the documentation, try contacting MT

3) Yes, the lettering is too small and not in the correct SP style.

Thanks Wayne. There wasn't anything in the documentation, so I'll try contacting MTH. I think I'm going to have to live with the large gap, as the drawbar also holds the electrical connection between the locomotive and tender.

Be careful if you shorten the tender drawbar. Be sure the radii you will be running this set on is large enough that you don't have a clearance problem between the locomotive and tender when running it on your smallest curves.

You have to wonder, with ALL the SP documentation out there how they would get the lettering wrong?  SMH

The same way they get Santa Fe and Union Pacific lettering wrong...

The font looks correct to me.

Looks good to me too, but it needs to be 20" for the "Southern Pacific" and 3" for the data lettering.

Because MTH's core business is the "toy" train market and that attitude of "close is good enough" permeates their HO products.

Also my understanding is both the GS4 and the GS6 drivers are the same size on the model but in real life they are different.
how close are the drivers on the GS6 model to prototype?
