Passenger Trains > Restaurant(s) near L.A. Union Station ?

My Dad and I are going to ride the Surfliner to/from LA Union Station tomorrow. Traxx (restaurant in Union Station) is closed for lunch on Saturday. So, I'm looking for restaurant recommendation within short walk of LA Union Station. TIA!

Agreed with Phillipe's - not only was it STRONGLY recommended to me when I asked the same question, but it's close, inexpensive, and GOOD. My four-year old son even liked it (he liked the railroad display better).

Walk across the street to Olvera Street and you will find plenty of Mexican restaurants.

You should check the menu at Phillipe's first to make sure you and your dad like it:

Keep in mind it is an old place (a landmark, of sorts), loud, crowded, and sawdust on the floor. Just so you know what you're getting yourself into. But it's a pretty cool place to go, with lots of nostalgia and history.

Both Phillippes and Olvera Street are across the street from Union Station.

Plenty of places in Chinatown that are pretty good.

If you're into sushi, Little Tokyo is about half a mile to the south on Alameda St. Face left out of the station and walk about three long-ish blocks.

Not to mention historic. Definitely Philippe's, 1001 North Alameda.

If you have a second meal, take the Red Line or Purple Line two stops to Pershing Square for Clifton's Cafeteria at 648 South Broadway. Since the Great Depression Clifton's has fed all guests, even those who could not afford to pay. http://www.cliftonscafeteria.com/home.html

Phillipe (no apostrophe) is the overwhelming choice, but if that's not your style there are numerous Mexican and Asain eateries within a few blocks walk.

Yup. Been going there for a long time. Also try Spring St. BBQ just around the corner, closer to Union Station.

If you like good Bar-B-Que, try Spring Street Smokehouse on the N. E. corner of N. Spring St. and Caesar Chavez. It is a little closer to Union Station than Phillipe's and is not as crowded.

That's pretty funny. And recently, arriving in the back from the LAX shuttle, I was really desparate, so I actually went and ate there. Forgive me!

Cliftons is still in business? I ate there my first visit to LA in 1948 and I thought it was fabulous!

It is. Take the Red Line to Pershing Square then walk east to Broadway and south to Clifton's.

My pick on Olvera Street would be La Luz del Dia on the south end of the street.

All this time I took the Red LIne up to 7th Street and walked several blocks to the nearest Dennys for a high class meal. No sawdust on the floor. So there is a Dennys right behind the depot?

NOW ya tell me.

Is the deli still in Pershing Square too? my first visit to Clifton's was in 55, street cars still ruled the area or so memory seems. In college I used to study in Pershing Square and eat at a daily near by top of the line sandwiches.

Las Golondrinas (swallows) on Olvera is very good.
