Rio Grande Scenic Ski train questions
Author: pdt

Trying to figure out the consist on the new Rio Grande Scenic
Ski train.

So far, what I think I've been able to figure out...
1. C39 or C40 GE's for power. (or something similar)
2. Dome cars...ex-alaska?
3. Club cars...refurbished late 1940's or 50's Budd stainless pass cars
4. Coaches...website says LIRR cars from the 1990's. LIRR double deckers?
5. Power car? No clue.

TIA for any info

SD90MACs for power. They're at UPs North Yard right now.

Former LIRR double-decks (ten 1990s prototypes for the current fleet) will provide the majority of seating.

Premium service will be offered in the ex-Alaska domes and in leased PVs. Rumor is the Milwaukee Road Skytop and Super Dome from the 261 consist may be on the train.

Not sure what will be providing the HEP for the consist.

SD90MACs? What's the livery -- Rio Grande??? And are these the 6000hp genuine SD90MACs? Seems as they'd want something more reliable for a passenger train on the Moffat line...

They are SD9043s.

How are they dealing with the lack of vestibule stairwells on the LIRR cars ?

How much would it cost to get a LIRR P72 coach up to Amtrak-certifiable condition ?

Just pile the snow high trackside and market the service as "ski-on, ski-off". If accomodation rental is any indicator this should allow them to charge twice as much :-)

It's a take on the Rio Grande. It's maroon instead of black with gold letter that say San Luis and Rio Grande. This is the Slug set the SLRG got, but the SD90's are in the same paint.

Denver area fans watch for AMTK No.5 on 18DEC and 21DEC
there are a number of PV's coming to town on those dates
and are expected to be part of the Ski Train's consist

Having worked on my share of them, Just stock the vestibules with C4. You would have a better shot with that, and it would be colorful.

There is a picture of the 90mac on railpictures:

Cool, thanks for the railpics link.

Not quite what I imagined, but still nice.

I wonder why they didn't go with the billboard-size "Rio Grande?" And that big SD90 nose would have looked good with the narrower yellow stripes like that slug.

A class act, looking forward to seeing photos of these on the road.

Re: Rio Grande lettering issues

Apparently SLRG has had some trademark problems with UPRR regarding use of "Rio Grande", especially when used by itself in the former speed lettering font. No problem with San Luis and Rio Grande RR, but when they simply used the large speed lettering "Rio Grande" the UP lawyers got into the act.
