Does the UP loco need to be leading since this is a detour?

Amtrak 156 probably didn't have operative cab signals for Speer-Ogden.

That was specific to Amtrak locomotive number 156. I've taken the Wyoming detour several times with no UP engine attached to the front.

Certain Amtrak engines (I believe one eighty something to 207 maybe) have the upgraded software for cab signals. When there is a planned re-route one of the engines with the correct software is used. If its not planned and Amtrak doesn't have the right software a pilot engine is used, like today.

Who pays for the UP engine, its fuel, and its "pilot" under the circumstances ?

About the cab-signals... How does that software work? Doesn't it need some hardware on the middle of the windshields a la NS? I'm trying to understand this system and I believe it was only used on CNW but UP also uses it?

Anybody has pics of cab signals hardware?

There's no hardware involved, it's all software and cab signal cards that fit into the cab signal rack in the nose.
