In the first photo, that station canopy has been without a roof for years... Are they ever going to roof it? I looks terrible.

It looks terrible, but it's not on an active platform. The platform is between Tracks 21 and 22. Track 21 was removed many years ago, although they probably miss having it these days, with the extra trains. Track 22, to the right of the platform, is used for staging diesels for southbound trains. It might be a good capital improvement, maybe a TIGER or stimulus project, to restore the platform and its passenger access, and use Track 21 as the diesel-staging track and use Track 22 for passenger trains. These days, things can get a little congested downstairs at Union Station.

Any idea why they removed track 21? With all the additional electrical conduit on the side of the stone wall to the west I wonder if it blocks the clearance between the train and the wall? Did track 21 have access to the tunnel under the station?

Clearance looks OK here in 1959, George Washington arriving.

Maybe those electrical wires got inflated -- like the guvment beauracracy and payroll -- in the intervening 51 years since 1959?
